imagined worlds expanding (2022)

Audiovisual installation by Ellen Arkbro + Mareike Yin-Yee Lee

With their collaboration, composer Ellen Arkbro and visual artist Mareike Yin-Yee Lee
create an immersive environment that invites viewers to experience a seamless
melding of sound and visual experience. Comprised of static elements: chords,
mirrors, lights, the environment is nonetheless ever-changing, depending
on/relating to the viewersÕ position in the room as they move through the space.
Time is slowed and perception to subtle shifts and variations is honed and
sensitized. Sounds shimmer. In this installation, using minimal means, spaces
expand and open up to temporalities, reflected portals, quivering spatialities.
Background, foreground, and the concrete dissolve, all is between and part of
the contemplative landscape, coming alive with the variegated participantsÕ view-
and-ear-points.

In their respective artistic practices, Arkbro and Lee are both interested in creating
worlds that invite viewers to attune their hearing and seeing into prolonged,
subtle perceptive experiences. Working together, they hope to open up a field
where sound and visual components are integral to each other in creating a
cohesive environment, rather than being separate elements that support each other.
